Interview – Fin Lee – Security Consultant.
Welcome back to our series where we talk to some of the newer Quorumites about their first six months in role!
Today we find out a bit more about Fin Lee, a Security Consultant in our Managed Services team.
How were you introduced to Quorum?
I have always been aware that Quorum existed, having mostly worked in cyber security in Edinburgh, it was a company that was always mentioned in a positive light.
When looking for a job, I was already following Quorum on LinkedIn when I came across a post, it genuinely made me laugh and I thought “They look alright”.
What were you doing before you joined Quorum?
Previously, I was a Principal Security Architect at a UK-based MSSP, juggling security operations, engineering, development, architecture, and clients. It was a very busy time, and it wasn’t great being spread thin, as I wasn’t able to really grow in my career or get the satisfaction of doing a good job!
Tell us about your job and team.
In my day-to-day, I help our clients make the most out of Microsoft Security products and services. The team I work in is highly capable, with buckets of experience. One of the first things that struck me about Quorum when joining was how many passionate people there were with a deep knowledge of their profession.
Any notable moments from your first six months?
Straight out of the gate at Quorum, I was able to work with a large client in the financial services sector. This has been a great experience, working with the client directly and being able to build a rapport to understand exactly what they need. Taking time to understand the task at hand, helps things go a lot more smoothly than I was used to in other roles; it’s refreshing working somewhere where quality is valued over quantity.
What have you achieved in your first six months?
Since working at Quorum, I have been able to do something I’ve been wanting to do for some time but haven’t had the time or energy to do: research! I have been able to put together a talk on artificial intelligence, delving into why everyone is talking about it now, and how to tell the difference between game-changing technology and snake oil.
Quorum has been super supportive in this and allowed me to present it internally; and I have since been able to deliver it as a guest lecturer at a UK university.
What do you hope to achieve over the next six months?
I hope to keep doing my research and start learning more about machine learning and AI, not just the large language models that are all over the news, but some of the more core concepts and how they can be applied in cyber security and Microsoft’s security platforms.
How is Quorum different from other employers?
I am still very busy at Quorum, but I very much have control over the reins of my work. I am given enough time to do work to a high quality, which helps me take more pride in what I do and deliver better outcomes for our clients. It is nice not to be hounded to do things quicker for better numbers or forced to move from one fire to the next.
At Quorum, I am given the time to truly focus and develop my career in cyber security. This is something a lot of companies promise, but few can deliver.
What advice would you give to anyone interested in joining Quorum?
If any of the above sounds familiar to you, or you would like to get stuck into something similar, I would suggest reaching out and submitting a CV.
Quorum is a fantastic place to work and grow, even if there is not a role currently advertised, have a chat with Jackie Begbie; if something comes up that fits you, she will let you know!
If you want to work with the industry’s best problem solvers, enhance business capabilities with technology, and create long-term impact, we’d love to hear from you. Click here to see all our latest vacancies or send your CV to Jobs@quorum.co.uk.
